Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 class page

Year 2 Class Page - Summer Term 1

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 2.

I am Miss Adenuga, the class teacher.  The whole Year 2 team will be more than happy to support you with any questions you may have or any information you require.  We will be available in the mornings at drop off and at home time.  We will all do everything we can to ensure the children develop in their skills, knowledge and learning and have a fun and memorable year.

What we are learning:

Our topic for Summer 1 is all about our local area, Hackney.  The children will have access to a selection of books relating to this topic.  In Literacy, we will be learning about and reading stories by the same author.  Children will be able to make comparisons of different books.  They will develop an understanding of progressive forms of verbs (past and present tense).  We will be covering a selection of activities such as role play to stimulate children's learning and writing book reviews.  Children will also have the opportunity to sequence artefacts, create and compare events on a timeline as well as use primary and secondary sources to ask and answer questions about their local area.

In Science, children will learn about plants.  They will observe plants closely using simple equipment and be able to explain how bulbs grow to mature plants.  Through this, children will be able to compile questions which they will answer through simple scientific testing.  In addition, we will gather and record data on how seeds grow to mature plants and what plants need to grow.

In Maths, we will be covering a range of topics this term.  We will look at fractions and time and use different mathematical manipulatives to support children's learning.  We have a range of representations to use such as bar models, part-part whole models, the use of rulers to draw shapes accurately as well as children using their reasoning skills to solve problems and calculations.  Addition and subtraction will be consolidated using the column method.

During PSHCE lessons, children will be learning about economic wellbeing, understanding where money comes from and identifying different types of jobs.  They will also develop a further understanding of how money can be used for different purposes.

Important Days:

PE will be on Wednesdays and Fridays, please ensure that children have their PE kits on these days.  PE kits should comprise of a white t-shirt, black bottoms and black trainers only, please.  Keep in mind that the children need to have their PE kits in their bags and should not be worn to school on the day.

Homework:

Reading

Children will have a reading record which they can take between home and school.  Please ensure that you make a comment in the reading record when you read with your child each day at home.

Maths

Tasks will be given to children every Friday and they are expected to complete these and return to school the following Wednesday.

Spellings

Children will be given a spelling sheet based on the Year 2 common and exception words.  This work also needs to be returned on Wednesdays.

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with one of the Year 2 team.  Thank you.

If you would like more information about the curriculum SPSM follows, please ask your child's class teacher.  Thank you.
