Year 6

Hello and welcome to our Class Page - Year 6
Summer Term 1
Welcome back after the Easter holiday!
In Summer 1 our Year 6 children focus on their final preparations for the KS2 SATs. These will take place the week beginning 11th May. This is a busy and important time as children revise core skills in Literacy (reading, grammar and spelling) and Maths. They revise for these topics through practice papers, targeted lessons and booster sessions. We ensure children feel confident and well-prepared whilst also balancing the schedule with engaging topics and creative activities to keep learning enjoyable. After SATs week, we celebrate all of the children's hard work with fun projects and transition activities as they look forward to Secondary School.
As the oldest children in the school, our Year 6 children present as fantastic role models for the younger classes. They will have opportunities to take on extra responsibilities such as being part of the School Council, Eco-warriors, Monitors or Rights Respecting Ambassadors. Throughout the year we will focus on building independence, resilience and a love for learning that will prepare all of the children for Secondary School.
The topic this half-term is 'Secrets'. In Destination Reader we will be reading the book, 'There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom' and in Literacy, we will focus on persuasive writing and narrative stories using formal and informal language as well as a variety of punctuation marks. In Numeracy, we will be working on decimals, multiplication and division. During Science, we will learn about electricity and in Geography we will explore North America. Our RE sessions will centre around Christianity and more specifically, the journey of life and death.
Reading
We cannot stress how important it is that children read every evening at home. Children need to write a comment about the book that they have read in their reading record. As well as the school books that children are given, they also need to read and access books on 'Reading Eggs'. This makes such a difference to children's learning and progress so please ensure that lots of reading is taking place at home. Before reading at home, you can ask your child to make predictions about the text and ask them to explain their reasoning. During reading, encourage children to remember and discuss events from the text (recall), asking them what happened and what they think about the events (critical thinking).
Maths
We ask children to log on to 'Mathletics' for 15 minutes each day. The target is for children to earn at least one certificate by our awards assembly on Friday.
PE / Uniform
PE takes place every Monday (pm) and Friday (pm). All children will need to bring their PE kits on these days to get changed into during school time. The PE kits consists of a white top, black bottoms and black trainers. It is very important that children are getting changed fully for PE in order to promote good personal hygiene. School uniform is a red school jumper or fleece with a white or red shirt underneath. Bottoms should be grey trousers or skirts, not tracksuit bottoms or leggings. All shoes should be black.
Water Bottles
Water bottles must be brought to school daily.
Homework
It is paramount that children spend time each day in order to complete their homework. This is to assist them with the lessons they have been learning throughout the week. You can add this to be a part of children's home routine after school. All homework is due on Sunday evening and children will all have access to Google Classroom login details.
We look forward to a memorable and successful year with our brilliant Year 6 class!
