Year 6

Hello and welcome to our Class Page - Year 6
Spring Term 1
Welcome to Year 6, a very special and important year at SPSM! This is a year of leadership, growth and preparing for the next big step in our children's educational journey. This year, we will be working together to prepare for our SATs assessments in May, focussing on core skills in Literacy and Maths. Our goal is to ensure that every child feels confident and well-prepared and that they approach the SATs with a positive attitude.
As the oldest children in the school, our Year 6 children present as fantastic role models for the younger classes. They will have opportunities to take on extra responsibilities such as being part of the School Council, Eco-warriors, Monitors or Rights Respecting Ambassadors. Throughout the year we will focus on building independence, resilience and a love for learning that will prepare all of the children for Secondary School.
We believe in a balanced curriculum, and whilst we work hard, we also have lots of fun! The topic for this half-term is 'Mountains'. In Destination Reader we will read the book 'Skellig' and in Literacy we will focus on newspaper reports, biographies and autobiographies using formal and informal writing, as well as a range of punctuation marks. In Numeracy we will be looking at multiplying fractions and the link between fractions, percentages and decimals. During Science lessons we will learn about forces and in Geography, we will focus on learning about mountains. Our RE topic will be Buddhism and more specifically, Life and Death.
Reading
We cannot stress how important it is that children read every evening at home. Children need to write a comment about the book that they have read in their reading record. As well as the school books that children are given, they also need to read and access books on 'Reading Eggs'. This makes such a difference to children's learning and progress so please ensure that lots of reading is taking place at home. Before reading at home, you can ask your child to make predictions about the text and ask them to explain their reasoning. During reading, encourage children to remember and discuss events from the text (recall), asking them what happened and what they think about the events (critical thinking).
Maths
We ask children to log on to 'Mathletics' for 15 minutes each day. The target is for children to earn at least one certificate by our awards assembly on Friday.
Uniform
We expect children to wear their school uniform every day. This creates a strong sense of belonging and helps children to remember that each morning they are getting dressed to learn! Our uniform consists of:
Standard grey trousers / skirts / shorts / dress (red and white checked dress in the Summer); red or white shirt; red school jumper or cardigan and BLACK shoes. Jewellery should only be simple stud earrings and nails must be natural. Hair should be neat and the child's natural hair colour. Only children in the Early Years are permitted to wear jogging bottoms due to toileting needs.
PE
PE takes place every Monday (pm) and Tuesday (am). All children will need to bring their PE kits on these days. The PE kits consists of:
White top, black bottoms and black trainers.
Water Bottles
Water bottles must be brought to school daily.
Homework
It is paramount that children spend time each day in order to complete their homework. This is to assist them with the lessons they have been learning throughout the week. You can add this to be a part of children's home routine after school. All homework is due on Wednesday and children will all have access to Google Classroom login details.
We look forward to a memorable and successful year with our brilliant Year 6 class!
