Year 2 Class Page - Spring Term 2, 2026
Welcome to our Class Page! Our topic for Spring 2 is The Great Fire of London. The children will be working with a selection of high-quality texts linked to this significant event. We will be delving into poetry and role play to stimulate the children's learning. Through these areas of learning, we hope to bring history to life and deepen the children's understanding of what happened in 1666. Children will write for a range of purposes inspired by this event. They will continue to develop their grammar skills and understand the difference between adverbs and adjectives.
This topic links closely with our History unit, Events Beyond Living Memory. Children will develop their understanding of chronology by sequencing events and placing them on a timeline. The will learn about important historical figures and explore how we know about the past, using primary and secondary resources. They will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions, compare different accounts and begin to understand why The Great Fire of London was such a significant event in British history.
In Science, children will be learning about the use of everyday materials. They will investigate different materials and their properties and explore why these are important when creating objects. Similarly, children will be able to find out how shapes of solid objects are made from some materials through squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
During Maths, we will be covering a range of topics this term which include fractions, time and money. We will use different mathematical manipulatives to support children's learning. This will involve the use of various representations such as bar models, part-whole models and the use of physical clocks to ensure children progress in their learning.
