Year 2 Class Page - Summer Term 2
Welcome to our Class Page! Our topic for Summer Term 2 is Hackney - our local area. Children will discover what makes our borough special by exploring its human and physical features, comparing different neighbourhoods and learning how Hackney has changed over time. Through map work, local studies and discussions, children will build a deeper understanding of their local community and its history.
A range of topic-related books will support learning throughout the term. In Literacy, children will be exploring engaging texts and stories, developing their reading comprehension and make responses through discussion, role-play, drama and a variety of writing activities. They will learn to compare texts, share and justify opinions and strengthen their writing by using punctuation accurately, including commas in lists and apostrophes for contraction and possession. Children will also continue to apply their phonic and spelling knowledge by writing clear, well-structured sentences.
In Maths we will revisit key concepts, strengthen understanding and address any gaps through practical, hands-on activities. Children will use representations such as bar models and part-whole models, develop their confidence in addition and subtraction using column methods, measure using different units and apply their skills to solve a range of mathematical problems.
During Science lessons, we will be investigating living things, identifying the differences between things that are living, dead and which have never been alive. Children will also look at different habitats and learn how animals and plants meet their basic needs whilst developing an understanding of how living things depend on one another.
