Summer Term 1

Welcome to Year 2.  Our focus for Summer 1 is our local area, Hackney.  This term, children will have access to various books related to our topic.  In Literacy, we will explore different stories by the same author.  Through this, children will learn to compare different books and recognise the genres they belong to.  Children will also enhance their understanding of the progressive forms of verbs in both present and past tenses.  We will engage in a variety of activities - including role play - to encourage learning, creating stories using children's own creativity and writing book reviews.

Children will have the opportunity to sequence artefacts, create and compare events on a timeline and use primary and secondary sources to ask and answer questions relating to their local area.

In Science, children will learn about plants.  They will make close observations using simple equipment and explain how bulbs grow into mature plants.  Through this, children will be able to create a range of questions which can be answered by simple scientific testing.  In addition, we will gather and record data of how seeds grow and mature into plants and what plants need to grow.

In Maths we will explore various topics such as time and measurements, utilizing different mathematical tools to aid children's understanding.  This will include the use of representations such as clocks and rulers, using various units of measurement, as well as encouraging children to apply reasoning skills for solving mathematical problems.

In PSHCE, children will be learning about economic well-being, understanding where money comes from and finding out about the range of different jobs available.  This area of learning will also help children to understand and describe how money can be used for different purposes.
